BUT - Brno University of Technology

Brno University of Technology is the oldest of Brno’s 6 universities. It was established in 1849 as a German-Bohemian technical institute. Its Czech branch was founded in 1899. It is the only technically oriented university in the Czech Republic covering the full range of technical sciences and some disciplines in the humanities. Brno has achieved top level scientific results in several branches: marine engineering (Kaplan turbine and the recently patented swirl turbine), experimental architecture in the pre-war period (Tugendhat villa, new concept for middle class homes, the unique Z-pavilion at the Brno Exhibition Grounds), new composite materials, close collaboration between physicians and engineers in implant materials and procedures development, small and ultra-light aircraft design, development of ICT, in particular with regards to links with life sciences, etc.

BUT R&D activities are focused on unspecified research funded mainly from the state budget. It further utilises the grants system for projects with clear targets (Grant Agency of Czech Republic, Grant Agencies of the particular ministries, foreign agencies and funding titles such as COST, COPERNICUS, EUREKA, Framework Programmes, Jean Monet, and bilateral cooperation agreements like CR-USA and CR-AT). An important and growing share of R&D is initiated directly by both local and international industrial companies (Škoda Auto, Šmeral, IBM, ABB, Philips, Flextronics, ČEZ, IMOS, etc).
